Sprint and Verizon Banish Usegroup Alt Sites

None dare call it censorship

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has located at least 88 sites in the Alt usenet hierarchy of the internet containing child pornography.

Usenet is an pre-world-wide-web online bulletin board system that began at Duke University in 1979. Usenet users post messages to newsgroups that can be read by anyone who has access to the system through a newsreader. The number of newsgroups has grown into around 100,000, concerning every topic imaginable. Apparently that is the problem.

In response to Cuomo's requests, Sprint and Verizon have blocked their customer's access to all Alt categories.  All 100,000 of them, except 8 or so that will be "managed."

I guess they will have to move my favorite alt thread "ensign.wesley.die.die.die" somewhere else.

Comments

FYI: Your internet provider must provide resources for newsgroups just as they do for email, so it's much more than a case of blocking access. If they were blocking a website for which they didn't have to provide server resources, then that would be different.
