Perhaps I should watch more Food Network
I’ve got a couple of ideas about 4th of July plans, but I know this: I will not be grilling.
In college, my friend Robyn and I took over an apartment from some friends who were moving to
We’d never grilled before. My cooking repertoire consists largely of peanut butter sandwiches, basic Mexican food, and frozen pizza. Robyn is more of a baker. But when I got some venison from my brother, we thought we’d try wrapping it in bacon and cooking it on the grill. I have no idea if that is a ridiculous idea or not from a technical standpoint, but I figured the combination of meat, bacon, and barbeque sounded tasty.
We stood on the porch with a bag of charcoal and realized we weren’t sure what to do next. We shook out a healthy layer of briquettes and tried to light them. Nothing. Half a dozen wasted matches later, we figured it was time for a new approach. We had some lighter fluid, which we applied liberally, and then, we struck a few more matches. I’ve since heard that it’s good to give lighter fluid a minute to soak into the coals, but at the time, we figured it was like lighting any flammable substance. Match + accelerant = instant fire. Only that didn’t happen. Now, I’m not a patient cook, which is why I consider peanut butter such a diet staple. It’s delicious, it’s filling, and it’s ready in the time it takes to open a jar. So, when the fire didn’t pick up right away, we tried more lighter fluid. We kept dousing the coals, and, frankly, I’m surprised either one of us still had eyebrows by the time we were finished. When the fire finally got going, it burned so hot and so high that some of the meat caught fire, which is one way make sure that it gets cooked all the way through, I guess.
We ate what we could, but the end result was that what wasn’t charred was almost impossible to chew. Not to mention that we used so much lighter fluid that it took the better part of an hour to get the flames out completely. After that, we retired the grill, and when we moved out, we left it on the porch for the next renters. My dad has since tried to show me how to grill burgers, but he mostly wanted someone to have a beer with and keep him company while he made dinner. Now, that I could do.
Have a safe and happy 4th everyone!!

You should really give the grilling thing another go.
There is truly nothing like the thrill of making your very own hamburger....bratwurst, or even basic ordinary hotdog.
Next time forget the lighter fluid thats for pros, let do something more user friendly, okly dokly? :)
Buy the "KINGSFORD match-light" brand or any "ready to lite" charcoals. cover the bottom of the grill with these and then have another small group of them right on top, just to be sure.
buy one of those grill lite flame thingys(vague enough for ya?)
and use it to light up the coals.
wait till they ALL turn grayish-white , THEN its time to grill.
ground round makes pretty good burgers. So with clean hands grab you a handful...as much as your little hand will hold, form into a ball then flatten out to about a little over half inch thick, and spatula it down on the grill. try to keep it sorta centered as thats the best spot heat wise. wanna do 2 or 3, then arrange them centrally, its not an exact science.
Now with METAL spatula in hand, step back and watch it (or them), after about 3 to 5 minutes flip that burger over.
Now is a good time to apply seasonings, if you are like me and like garlic, apply garlic powder all over the entire meat patty. anything you think you might like as seasoning for meat, now is the time. flip the meat again periodically as noted. after about 4 flips its time to spatula it up put it on a plate, and take a knife and cut it open in the middle so you can see what color is the core of the burger. Put back on fire and repeat till done to your liking.
IF the heat is making the outer part blackened and the center still bloody, simply take it inside cover it with a papertowel, and microwave meat for about 36 seconds.
there is nothing better than homemade burgers done YOUR way, beats the hell outta burgerQueen. (wink wink)
tune in next time as I explain the ease of grilling bratwurst, and the sheer ease of cooking hotdogs.

For the record, the existence of so much spray butter was equally a mystery to me.

Ben? HEE! I choose to believe you because I think that all four containers of spray butter were Kerry's, and you were kind enough to leave us a well stocked bar. You always did know the way to my heart!
