"Superbad," the latest comedic romp from Judd Apatow (he's a producer) opens today. The film is written by Seth Rogen ("Knocked Up") and Evan Goldberg (Rogen's childhood buddy) and is directed by Greg Mottola ("The Daytrippers"). Manohla Dargis of The New York Times writes, "A tickly, funny tale of three teenage boys revved up by their surging, churning, flooding hormones, the movie joins the tumescent ranks of similarly themed works about male sexual desire — consider “Portnoy’s Complaint,” think “Porky’s” — and its somatic epiphanies, treacherous secretions, anguished lessons and apparently limitless storehouse of embarrassments." Pete Travers of Rolling Stones agrees, "the hip, hot and hilarious Superbad packs more gut-busting laughs than you can count."
Carina Chocano of The Los Angeles Times notes, "I hope it's not damning the movie with the wrong kind of praise to say that for a film so deliriously smutty, "Superbad" is supercute." Philip Martin of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette doesn't love it as much as these folks, but opines, "the movie is crude and sweet, rife with vulgarity yet redeemed by its generous spirit and intelligence."
