I've been away from the blog this week, unfortunately, but there's a lot that's been happing on the festival front, and in other news. The Toronto International Film Festival is over as of this morning. By all accounts, the hot films coming out of the festival are: Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan bio-pic "I'm Not There", "Atonement," from Joe Wright ("Pride and Prejudice"), Jason Reitman's "Juno", "Michael Clayton," from "Bourne Identity" scribe Tony Gilroy, "Lars and the Real Girl," starring Ryan Gosling, Ang Lee's "Lust,Caution" (despite a nasty Variety review), "Eastern Promises" from David Cronenberg ("The History of Violence"), "No Country for Old Men," from The Coen Bros., "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," from Julian Schnabel and "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" both of which were hits at Cannes, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, Robin Swicord's "The Jane Austen Book Club," and "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead," from legendary director Sidney Lumet.
"Margot at the Wedding" from Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale"), Woody Allen's "Cassandra's Dreams," "In the Valley of Elah," from Paul Haggis, "Redacted" from Brian De Palma, and "Reservation Road" from Terry George ("Hotel Rwanda") all entered with some hype and left with mixed reactions. They each be worth seeing, of course.
Shekar Kapur's "Elizabeth: The Golden Age tanked, so did Gavin Hood's "Rendition." Julie Taymor's "Across the Universe" was both loved and hated.
