The MovieGoer

BSR writes about all things film.

I do this from time to time.  I catalogue great reviews that people write - those reviews that make you desperate to see a film.  A.O. Scott's review of "Into the Wild," is one ( "Little Children" in 2005 or "Miami Vice" also come to mind).

Of course, when talking about reviews, I can't help but think about those reviews that just made me laugh.  They often involves films that suck - and I don't mean suck like the way say "Alien v. Predator" sucks (obviously) - but more along the lines of big budget, studio meltdown suckage -  anything by Michael Bay or Brett Ratner or M. Night Shyamalan, for example.  See Anthony Lane's review of
"Star Wars: Episode III" or "Phantom of the Opera."

"Into the Wild" opens this weekend at Market Street Cinema (at least according to the poster in the theater and the website).  The film is rocking a 73 on Metacritic, and is brought down only by lame-ass reviews from Dana Stevens of Slate and David Denby of The New Yorker.  Whatever.  Read Scott's review.  I think you'll want to see it.
