Did you see anything this weekend?  Sean Penn's "Into the Wild" is at Market Street Cinema.   Ben Affleck's "Gone Baby Gone" is also here.  "Not only did Ben Affleck have to sweat out making his directing debut by adapting a Dennis Lehane novel (Clint Eastwood already set the bar on Lehane's Mystic River), he also cast his brother Casey in the leading role. Nepotism would be the least of Affleck's problems if Gone Baby Gone flatlined onscreen. No worries. The brothers Affleck both emerge triumphant in this mesmerizing thriller," writes Pete Travers of Rolling Stone

"Things We Lost in the Fire," starring Benicio del Toro and Halle Berry is "an engrossing melodrama, and it has its heart in the right place," notes Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times.  "Rendition" from "Tsotsi" director Gavin Hood also showed up.  A.O. Scott of The New York Times observes, "A well-meaning, honorable movie. Which is not to say that it is a very good one."

Extremism in support of private insurers is no virtue, and President Bush was defiantly unvirtuous in resisting a Medicare bill that preserves and strengthens government-funded health care for elderly Americans. /more/
