HEATH LEDGER IS DEAD
We've lost another great young actor, apparently to suicide or accidental overdose today. Heath Ledger, 28, recently nominated for an Academy Award for "Brokeback Mountain," appeared in eighteen films including the upcoming Chris Nolan Batman sequel "The Dark Knight." Ledger plays the Joker and the film is currently in post-production.
According to The New York Times, "At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building, at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of the bedroom Mr. Ledger was in. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger naked and unconscious on a bed, with pills scattered around his body. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities."
Stephen Holden of the Times wrote of his performance in "Brokeback Mountain," “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”
I don't say this often, but I will really miss this actor. His work, like River Phoenix before him, was the stuff of magic.
