The Oscar race might clear up a bit, or not.  At the New York Film Festival critics and moviegoers will get to see "Changeling" from Clint Eastwood that has everyone buzzing about Angelina Jolie's lead performance along with "Che" from Steve Soderberg that is either a subtle masterpiece or a well intentioned mess; Benicio Del Toro is sky high in the Best Actor race. "The Class" is the Best Foreign Film entry from France and should be the front runner in that race (It took the Palm d'Or at Cannes).  It's primary competition may come from the Italian film "Gomorrah" about organized crime and the Israeli film "Waltz with Bashir."  Both have been selected for competition by their respective countries.  If you never saw "Old Joy" you should throw it in your netflix queue.  Director Kelly Reichart is back with her follow-up "Wendy and Lucy" starring Michelle Williams.  A New York Times cover story on the Oscar-nominated actress has critics buzzing.  Finally, "The Wrestler" starring Mickey Rourke.  Yes, that Mickey Rourke.  A Best Actor nomination may really be in his future.

I wasn't terribly enthusastic over the trailer for this film, but the cast, director and power of the story (Here's a link to Steve Lopez' book) make this an instant-Oscar contender.  I love this poster and I'm hoping it works out.  The year of Robert Downey Jr. continues.

It's going to be a good weekend for movies in Central Arkansas.  The adaptation of Philip Roth's novel "The Dying Animal" (the film version is titled "Elegy") starring Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz opens at Market Street Cinema"Appaloosa," the western from Ed Harris and also starring Viggo Mortensen opens here too.  "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" starring Michael Cera; "Blindness" starring Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore from the novel by Jose Saramago; and "Flash of Genius" starring Greg Kinnear about the guy who invented the windshield wiper round out the group.

"Iron Man," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Taxi to the Dark Side" all arrive on DVD today.  Also, if you missed "The Visitor" starring Richard Jenkins when it was in Little Rock earlier this year, you have to grab it on DVD.  It arrives next week.

Friday's full of new releases here in Arkansas

The first installment of the Gurus 'O Gold is up at Movie City News.  This is a fun list to follow throughout the Oscar season because it brings together several different media personalities.

I can't say I'm surprised with the initial pics.  "Frost/Nixon," "Milk," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Revolutionary Road" make the top 5 in the Best Picture Race.

Interestingly, it appears that Robert Downey Jr. will be pushed for lead actor in "The Soloist" and Jamie Foxx will be in the supporting actor race.  I had it flipped.
