"Quantum" has a generic, in-your-face functionality and a restlessness that just wants to push the movie on to the next chase/shootout/slugfest, rather than -- in the traditional Bond way -- relishing the spaces in between. - - From a review by Derek Elley in Variety. The film opens in the U.K. two weeks ahead of its U.S. release.

Robert Downey Jr.
is locked in for two more installments of "Iron Man" and will also play Tony Stark in the upcoming film "The Avengers" which re-unites Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Incredible Hulk.  Jon Favreau is on board to direct the next "Iron Man" film.  And in an interesting bit of news Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard in the "Iron Man" sequels as well as in "The Avengers."

This sounds like a very bad idea:

"For his next directing effort, Steven Soderbergh is plotting a 3-D live-action rock n  roll musical about Cleopatra."

What happened to Kristin Scott Thomas, the promising actress who appeared in "The English Patient" and was nominated for an Academy Award?  After that film she appeared in "Mission: Impossible," "The Horse Whisperer," "Random Hearts" and "Life as a House," once commercial (if not confusing) hit and three busts.  She had a small role in Robert Altman's ensemble masterpiece "Gosford Park," in 2001, but then she disappeared from mainstream cinema, returning to France, her home, and appearing in a series of independent, foreign-based films.

In quiet fashion she has she has returned with what critics are describing as a "stunning performance" in the French film "I've Loved You So Long" written and directed by Philippe Claudel in which she plays a women recently released from prison.
Anne Thompson of Variety declared that she is a lock for an Oscar nomination.

I am eagerly anticipating Charlie Kaufman's new film "Synedoche, New York."  Kaufman, who wrote "Being John Malcovich," "Adaptation" and the lovely "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" takes a seat in the director's chair this time, his first (he had hoped that his friend and collaborator Spike Jonze would direct).  The film opens in limited release tomorrow (sorry Arkies, it doesn't include us), but here's a review from Manohla Dargis of The New York Times to hold you over.  If the critical acclaim is anything close to this, expect it to skyrocket up the Oscar charts.
