Gettin' Out, Saturday.

GET UP! Sorry, y’all….I was having a Nurse Ratchett moment, and you probably won’t be reading this until later. Hey it’s 9 a.m., Saturday: here’s what you should think about doing this morning:

There’s beau coup yard sales in the Hillcrest area, check it out. They always seem to have to best stuff. I went to the FURR yard sale (a kitty cat rescue unit), across the street from the Baptist church on Kavanaugh in Hillcrest, and found a gem: An original “Gilley’s” beer can. Must’ve been, like, 15 years old. Got it for a quarter. The beer tasted pretty bad though.

The 9th St Block party is about to happen: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at W. 9th & State Sts. Free popcorn. Free drinks. Free cotton candy. Free music. There’s also a neighborhood memory booth. How about this: my first apt. was on 9th St. (on the other side of the RR tracks). My rent was, some 15 years ago, $165 a month. The building has since been torn down….

Also, the Greek Food Festival, today and tomorrow at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1100 Napa Valley. Baklava.

Take a nap and get out tonight:

The Duwayne Burnside show is tonight at Sticky Fingerz. Don’t miss it, blues lovers. He has all the charisma of his grandpappy and he likes to get funked up. Don’t know but hope the Mississippi Mafia shows up…Fundamental Elements (from St. Louis) opens at 9 p.m.

The band, the scenesters, their entourage: Smoke Up Johnny, the Moving Front, Drug Prowling Wolves. 10 p.m. $5. Lots of rock kids, dare I say the crowd will be the best dressed this evening? But it’s all about the music, boi. White Water Tavern.

Late night: Tom Jones has studied under Mark Simpson and CeDell Davis, thus some well-studied Delta blues. A good afterparty if you’re gonna catch the Burnside show. Memberships for Midtown are available at the door.

Ciao for Now.

The old Safeway store at the corner of 12th and Cedar Streets doesn't look like much these days - a peeling blue hulk of a building, marooned between the Willie Hinton Community Resource Center and the church on the next corner. /more/

As Judge Wendell Griffen says, courage is not a vice (though critics seem to fault him for having it) but a virtue. /more/
