'Superman' is soaring above all others

"The Devil Wears Prada" wasn't going to do blockbuster box office numbers this weekend, and the box office chart is left for "Superman Returns" to run away with the big numbers, with weekend estimates at $52 million and overall estimates of $84 million since its June 28 opening, according to the chart from Box Office Mojo. Actually, with some theaters showing "previews" at 10 p.m. June 27, "Superman Returns' was basically the first movie geared toward an 8-day opening (the studio wags are going to call it a 7-day opening, but we know the truth).

"The Devil Wears Prada," geared to a much more selective viewing audience (meaning, no kids), was looking about half the business of "Superman Returns" on opening weekend. We saw it Sunday with a good late afternoon turnout in a theater at Breckenridge Village. It's a fun, good movie, and deserving of a better grade that what the statewide daily offered on Friday (B-minus). Meryl Streep is perfect as the devilish magazine editor Miranda Priestly; Anne Hathaway, who as Andrea Sachs joins the ficticious Runway magazine straight out of Northwestern J-school, gets a makeover and looks better than a lot of the runway models.
