The Mind of Matt: Movies and more
Matt Smith checks in on clubbing, the latest movies, dining and whatever else is on his mind:
We hit the bike rally in Hot Springs last Saturday, formerly the H.O.G. weekend but this year open to all bikes and their owners. Big Shane worked security at the Hot Springs Convention Center. They had 93 bikes inside. I think the place can hold 150. There were crowds all over the downtown area. The streets filled motorcycles and other traffic. The event looked like a huge success. I had never seen such a large crowd at Longshot Saloon, other than some weekends during racing season.
Coys was the place for dinner last Saturday night in the Spa City. We had reservations for 6:30 and arrived on time. The best thing about this place was the guy working the door. We sat down right on time. Our dinner arrived at 7:50pm, and the food items were wrong. They didn’t get the order right, and the steaks weren’t cooked correctly. Coys was horrible. Never again.
Movies – it is time to catch up! "The Black Dahlia" is pathetic. How do you take the most famous murder in Los Angeles history, a decent book (some say really good), Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart mix in together, and get this crud. They throw in some violence and sex scenes that make no sense. They don’t help the plot, and serve no purpose. I guess the writer just ran out of ideas.
"Gridiron Gang" was entertaining. I like a true story. The Rock isn’t that bad in the right role. Bodyguard, police officer, hit man, football coach, and corrections officer are all roles he can play. Xzibit is credible as the assistant coach.
"Crank" is a full throttle action ride. Blast after blast for the ADHD crowd, or just regular ol' action film fans. I enjoyed the filming technique of placing a camera in a backpack and running after the star, Jason Statham.
"Invincible" is a good film for the whole family, Mark Wahlberg shines as the former substitute teacher and bartender who is invited to try out for the NFL's Eagles.
"Hollywoodland" is a nice little period piece about the death of the original TV Superman, George Reeves. The costumes, cars, cinematography gave the film a noir feel. Adrien Brody (as the private investigator hired by Reeves' mother to investigate her son's mysterious suicide) and Ben Affleck (as Reeves) get equal screen time and both are able to star in almost separate story lines. I liked it, but it was really slow at times.
"The Last Kiss" is your standard chick flick, starring Zach Braff ("Scrubs," "Garden State"). There is no new ground covered here. This is the typical Lifetime network story line. The men are bad and stupid, women rule! I had to struggle to stay awake, even with Red Bull.
