Big weekend for new movies locally
Nine new movies open in the Central Arkansas market today, including a changeup in the two movies being shown at the IMAX Theater south of Little Rock National Airport.
The most interest, from our end, is for Clint Eastwood's Iwo Jima war flick "Flags of Our Fathers" and the magical, mysterious "The Prestige," starring Christian Bale (so good in "Batman Begins") and Hugh Jackman. Director-writer Sofia Coppola is back, with Kirsten Dunst starring, in "Marie Antoinette," which seems to be a showy piece, from reading the reviews. "Confetti," opening today at Market Street Cinema, sounds like an unfunny send up of weddings, but "Jesus Camp" is a must-see documentary about these extreme right Christian camps that may be subverting young minds (think everything we say that seems wrong about those fundamentalist Muslim camps in the Middle East and apply them to a place in South Dakota). Blake Rutherford reviews "Jesus Camp" in this week's print and online editions.
"Flicka" sounds like a well-made, feel-good family flick, and obviously for us older folks a revisit of the old "My Friend Flicka" horse story. Apparently, Tim McGraw really can act. We already knew that Maria Bello and Alison Lohman could.
New at the IMAX Theater are "Lost Worlds," a film narrated by Harrison Ford about disappearing eco-systems, and the return of "Thrill Rides" just in time for the real-life rides going on at the State Fairgrounds.
And, though it's not actually "new," per se, Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas" has been reworked as a 3-D film and opens today.
