To do Saturday: Celebrate Celtic style
It always gets us that this annual Celtic Fair in Southwest Little Rock is actually a month before St. Patrick's Day (or at least seems that way, as we remember it happening the third weekend in February last year), but what a great way to get into the gaelic green spirit. The t hird annual Celtic Fair, sponsored by the Arkansas Celtic Music Society, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mabelvale United Methodist Church, 10500 Woodman St.
General Admission is $10, $8 for ACMS members and senior citizens, $5 for students with school I.D., and children under age 5 are free. The maximum charge per family will be $30. There's food catered all day by Joey's Seafood and Grill in Conway (fish and chips included, and a children's menu), and entertainment starts at noon. Look for performances from the Arkansas Scottish Dance Society; guitarist, storyteller and bodhran player John Burleson of Dallas, joined by local Celtic musician Peggy Loyd; Legacy, a Jackson, Miss., Celtic band; the versatile performer and storyteller Mairtin de Cogain of County Cork, Ireland (he sings with the famed Fushia Band); some stepping by the McCafferty School of Irish Dance and O'Donovan School of Irish Dance, both of Little Rock; and the Celtic duo Two Cents Worth from Siloam Springs.
Also, the fair will have education workshops on the accordion, bodhran, guitar, fiddle and storytelling, and the kids of all ages will enjoy seeing the Irish wolfhounds, visiting the arts and crafts displays, and a silent auction is also planned.
