Want the job as Shelley, the mascot for the Travs?
Auditions for the next "Shelley," the "Traveler" mascot for the Arkansas Travelers minor league baseball team, will be held Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center's Fisher Court on the UALR campus. Potential mascots should be willing to put up with crying kids hysterically running away from them in the stands, and to possess an ability to run the bases backward or to fall on their face when running the bases correctly, thereby allowing a 5-year-old who shouldn't outrun an adult the chance to win a prize. They need to do this for 70 games, plus assorted other public appearances.
The open audition will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and some mascot experience is recommended although not necessary. The Travs' announcement says "Applicants will be asked to dance, show emotions and do randomly entertaining things all without speaking. Those performers that are interested in setting up a time for an audition on February 17 are asked to call the Travs office at 664-1555."
It might mean something special to be the first Shelley at the new Dickey-Stephens Park. The opening game is April 12 against the Frisco RoughRiders.
