Son Volt at the Rev Room
Laconic alt-country hero Jay Farrar brings his band Son Volt to the Rev Room tonight for its just about annual appearance in town. Of course, together with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Farrar started out in Uncle Tupelo, a seminal band whose first album, "No Depression," inspired a subgenre and a pretty good magazine. Then he formed Son Volt, made one kick-ass album, then several same-ish sounding ones. Then he made some relatively experimental solo records before reforming Son Volt with a new lineup.
I quit caring four or five years ago.
But SV's new album, "The Search," sounds pretty good. You can stream it here. Derry deBorja, from Canyon, has joined up and added a welcome dose of new sounds—horns, loops, even an electric bouzouki. And there's a song called "Methamphetamine" that shouts out Arkansas. Imagine that.
