Mike Powell, who recently called Little Rock home for a short time while he worked at The Oxford American, gave a talk at the EMP music conference in April on North Korean pop music. Salon interviewed him a couple weeks ago. He also started, recently, blogging, impressionistically and awesomely, on Mountain Goats songs. Also, you should regularly check online music mag Stylus, where Powell's become the de facto editor.

HBO just announced casting for "Generation Kill," a seven-part mini-series on the Iraq War from Ed Burns and David Simon, the creators of the best show on TV, "The Wire." The project is based on Evan Wright's nonfiction book.

The 50th Anniversary Stax Records concert is coming up at the Orpheum in Memphis. Isaac Hayes, Booker T & the MGs, Mable John, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, the Soul Children and Angie Stone are slated to play with a promise of more acts to be announced. The show's Friday, June 22. Tix are $25-$1000.
