Alice Walton ranks highish

From our art correspondent Leslie Peacock:

ARTnews magazine has named Alice Walton one of the top 200 art collectors in the world. She didn't make its top 10, however ... perhaps because she's buys early American art, which isn't in the big league of prices. Or perhaps its because she's discrete about what she buys. Who knows? Maybe she did pay $78 million for the Mark Rothko that sold earlier this year at auction. The magazine cites only "The Editors" as its source of information.

Comments

78 million isn't exactly discrete but then she is trying to fill a museum very quickly. i just looked it up and the met was founded in 1870 so they must have backed up boats to fill up that giant museum so we can't criticize her for trying to fill a small museum in arkansas. i am excited to see what she has. it isn't any different than what the rich guys did to fill the museums in the 1800's other than she is a woman, so go alice.
