Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase Rd. 1: The Running Back

The Running Back

Background: Lead singer/guitarist Alan Thomas formed the band in high school with his friend Jeffrey Humble, who plays pedal steel and "other off the wall" instruments. As students in Ouachita, they added players — Craig on guitar, Landon on bass and Vince on drums.

Sound like: Dreamy indie-pop. Music for the hoodie set to think about girls and boys to.

Where you'll find them: Coffeehouses and on campus. In the past, Juanita's once with the Damn Bullets and Rock 'n' Roar at the zoo opening for the Boondogs.

You can't say we discriminate: The Running Back have a "I Like Mike," button in support of Ouachita's most famous alum, on their MySpace.

Ark. Times Musicians Showcase Round 1: 607

607 AKA Adrian Tillman

Who? C'mom, really? Surely, you know 607, the ubiquitous and prolific local rapper. Since the early aughts, no one, in any genre, has played more shows around town or released more albums. With his latest mixtape, "G for Go Getta," he's up to 29. Around town, even when he's not playing shows, he's a regular everywhere from swank clubs to barbershops in the hood, talking to people, always with his trusty graphite briefcase in tow (full of his latest CD).

The long game of sales: “I don’t tend to get girls’ phone numbers the first time I meet them. I see them and shake their hands and remember their names. The next time, I go up to them like I know them, and it’s much easier than trying to seal the deal the first time. It’s like that with everything. Some 40-plus, middle-aged white dude might be more prone to talk to me if he’s seen me a couple places.”

Anything you can do, I can do backwards: At early 607 shows, the rapper wowed audiences with "Palingraph," a long rhyme he'd do regularly and then go back through backwards. If you'll allow a little poetic license, it makes sense both ways. More.

To Russia, with love: After becoming frustrated without what he termed a "static" local market, 607 reduced a corporate model to scale and exported himself to "hip-hop starved" Russia twice last year. He's planning to continue overseas outreach with a trip to Australia in the spring.

Video love: "Cheat Wit," 607's latest foray into YouTube videoing.

Ark. Times Musicians Showcase Round 1: Justin Bank

Justin Bank

Background: "A computer will help you get good grades, but a guitar will get you great groupies," Bank's uncle told him when he was 15. Over the 20 year career that's followed, the singer/songwriter has played in Little Rock bands like SFZ, Free Love Virgins and the Royal Electric. In Colorado, he played with a roots rock band called the Beauregards.

Albums: A 1996 solo album called "Beauregard," named for a nickname Bank's grandfather gave him as a child and comprised of songs Bank wrote will living in New York and France. Coming up, a new album, half acoustic and half electric to be released through Upperworks.

Sounds like: Alt-country-tinged singer/songwriter material. "Wry observations on love, usually with tongue planted firmly in cheek," Bank says.

Showcase accompaniment: Nick Devlin, the acclaimed local guitarist.

Ark. Times Musicians Showcase Round 1: Riverboat Crime

Riverboat Crime

Formed: March 2007

From: North Little Rock

Members:
Josh Stoffer (vocals, guitar, piano, woolitzer), Adam Tompkins (drums, percussion), Wes Coker (bass).

Album: "Walking Shoes," the band's debut album was recorded at Blue Chair Studio with Jordan Trotter of Grand Serenade and Darian Stribling of Blue Chair Studio. It'll be out in Feb. or March.

Sounds like: The band says indie rock, garage blues and "a hint of alt-country," but a lot of songs lean more towards big, bright unironic pop-rock.

False start: The idea of Riverboat Crime started with a jam session between friends in 2005, but according to a press release, "time-restraints, alcohol, and substance abuse brought the project to a stand-still after only a month of rehearsals." The band came together in July 2007 after Stoffer booked a gig to help raise money after an automobile accident.

Where you'll find them: So far the band has kept to the north side of the river, playing Cornerstone and Reno's.

Always on the innovation tip, DJ g-force takes a break from music blends to twiddle the knobs on video. Video scratching, he calls it. Epileptics should probably sit this one out.
