Showcase results

The kickoff of the Ark. Times Musicians Showcase last night couldn't have gone any better. All four acts—the Running Back, Justin Bank, Riverboat Crime and 607—gave  solid performances, the crowd was large and lively and the judges stayed attentive throughout.

We'll have pictures and video and more recap a little later in the day, but now its my pleasure to announce 607 as the winner of the first round. He'll be one of the four finalists battling it out on Friday, March 7, at Revolution.

Riverboat Crime killed last night! I guess the judges like to hear covers and F' bombs dropped for no apparent reason (607). If the contest was judged on musicianship and originality - of which 607 had niether - then Riverboat would have won hands down.

Who knew Riverboat's mom read this blog?

Anyone discover they accidentally went home with the wrong jacket last night? I had a very cold walk from Stickyz to my car!

Also, 607 did all or at least mostly his own stuff right? He had a much better response from the crowd than the other bands.

607 rapped about your mom last night. over a britney spears sample.

How is the use of samples/clips from other songs NOT cover material?

I don't really care, just wondering.

oh dear. let me introduce you to this new and exciting music called HIP HOP.

it's all the rage with the kids. . .

i can't believe we're having this conversation in 2008.

Instead of being a dick, how about answering my question?

Maybe someday I can be as cool as you.

lew, forgive me. i get that all the time. my wife usually sez i'm more of an ass than a dick, but whatever.

as for my response, or lack thereof. i suppose i have no patience for the (previous) posts questioning musicianship and originality in hip-hop. . . and calling 607 a cover artist because he raps over a britney track misses the point altogether.

yes it's largely a sample based medium. so what? it's about the lyric, yo. and i'd much rather hear 607 than brit brit on that track anyday.

No one's questioning the musicianship and originality in hip-hop, it's just doesn't compare to say... any other genre of music. Unless your The Roots or OutKast or anyone that does more than just "speak" in time with a beat your created (or didn't) on a computer.

Thank you, Spinsouth.

I appreciate the response/take, and the Hip Hop insight.

Dear Riverboat's mom, er, I mean Strothers:

If i have to choose b/w a world with Public Enemy or a world with the Black Keys, gimme PE all day long.

For the record, your sourgrapes attitude is doing Riverboat Crime a great disservice. They're a very cool band.

Riverboat Crime blew everyone away last night, hands down.

i'm over it.

Dear spinsouth, er, I mean 607's absent father:

I agree with you on that.

Sorry 607 is no Chuck D.

i believe someone just tipped their hand a bit.

I was at the Riverboat Crime performance Thursday night, which blew away the first band.
I did not stay to see 607, but I did listen to their featured song "Dance Directions" on the provided CD, and I immediately deemed it the worst song in the history of modern recording. Is it too late to sign up for next Thursday night's battle? - I think my sister has an old Fergie CD I could mumble over.

Battles of the Bands are always flawed. They're meaningless. Having said that, they are a lot of fun to play as long as you don't take it seriously. It's impossible to be objective when judging music. The music you like is always going to seem more original to you or rock harder to you. You know, don't sweat it. Just think of the Showcase as an opportunity to play in front of some people you don't normally play to... that's always a good thing.
