Plug: Nathan Brown's 8-track obsession

Here's an extra bump for Sam Eifling's feature in this week's paper about Nathan Brown, known to local showgoers as Browningham, the blue-eyed crooner/one-man band who sounds an awful lot like Michael McDonald. As interesting as all that is, this is a story about Brown's deep affinity and loyalty to the "humble," largely discarded 8-track. It's a good read.

Read it here.

hmm. the 8-track devotion smacks of a little self-conscious-clever and a whole lotta precious.

i'm all about the analog, but i daresay there's no 8 track cartridge setup that can compete with a good turntable.

Yeah, it's a fun story but I ain't buying it. For one thing, yes the tape is wider but only a quarter of the tape is being played at one time so it's not really comparable to reel-to-reel. Also, is the new music being recorded on analog equipment? If not, how would transferring digital to analog make it sound better?

Okay, looking back through the article it does say the new stuff is recorded with the 8-track equipment so nevermind about my last point.

You guys give this guy way too much credit. Saying an 8-track tape offers audio fidelity superior to anything is retarded. It may be better than wire recordings, but that is about it.

The article calls him "one of Little Rock's certifiable audiophiles." Who is this certifying authority? I mean, I guess he may have an interest high quality sound, but he obviously has no concept of what that really means. True "audiophiles" tend to search for an entirely uncolored sound. Brown thinks he can get that by degrading a digital copy with an analog generational loss and inferior equipment?

Just because it reminds you of the crappy recordings you had when you were a kid, doesn't mean it actually sounds better.

haters!

Duuuuudes, (and I'm 99.9 percent sure you're all dudes) ya'll need to take a chill pill. I swear to God you audio buffs get a bug up your ass any time someone puts forth a sound-related opinion that differs from your own. It's obvious Brown loves music, so who cares if he's referred to in the story as an "audiophile"? No one's going revoke your hi-fi snob club membership if you happen to prefer 8-tracks to CDs or tin-can telephone to FLAC files. Yeesh.

Actually, they will.

Yeah, I think you missed the point. Nathan Brown has repeatedly made claims that have no basis in reality.

I get just as irritated by someone claiming that their vitamins cure cancer when they have absolutely no scientific research to back it up.
