Anyone else noticed the steady rise in downtown police riding Segways? 

Years ago, when the Segway first debuted, and was billed as a transport that would revolutionize the postal service and geriatric mobility, I worked for a gadget lover, who was one of the first to own one of the gizmos. So Ive had plenty of experience zipping around. And let me tell you, high-speed chases and Segway’s don’t mix.

I’ve seen bloody chins and other, less damaging but still awkward crashes. From what I’ve witnessed, the River Market Segway patrol appears to be an update on the horse patrol: mainly about presence. But recently came word that McCain Mall’s security force would be patrolling in similarly futuristic fashion.

Oh, the dollars I’d pay to see a mall security guard in pursuit of a shoplifter. I’d of course be rooting for justice, but if it could come with a non-injurious escalator crash or fall in the fountain, all the better.
