One of Rock Candy's favorite DJs writes in to tell us several things we didn't know. One, that Gaucho's turns into Rio's Lounge (yeah) at 9 p.m. Two, Rio's has a brand spankin' new dancefloor. And three and most importantly, said DJ, DJ g-force, is the resident DJ AND VJ. Details above, plus he'll be there on Halloween.
From the the Interface on Spinner.com. You can also watch live versions of "Heavy Cross," "Love Long Distance," "Standing in the Way of Control" and "Pop Goes the World." There's an interview at the end, too.
Free Candy: Scarier than a Lil Wayne birthday cake
Epic Mystery Train Halloween Mix Our very own A Boy Named Sooie digs deep to pull out this oddball assortment of frightening boogie woogie, blues, jazz and rockabilly tunes. So good. [Derek's generosity]
Kid Koala "Tricks 'N' Treats" Like a lot of turntablism, this drags after a while, but anything that leads with an extended sample of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" deserves a spot on your Halloween playlist. [Road 2 Nowhere]
Jim Carroll "People Who Died" It's not especially festive, but the creepy glee with which Carroll sings about the horrible ways people he knows have died ("Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room / Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs / Judy jumped in front of a subway train Eddie got slit in the jugular vein") is right there in the Halloween music sweet spot. Plus, Caroll just died, died! [Snuh]
BONUS: I'm sure hip-hop heads have seen this, but casual fans make sure you check out this freestyle track from the BET Awards with Mos Def, Black Thought and Eminem. Everyone MURDERS it.
Three of the Six Tom Petties. Dunno where the Heartbreaker is.
THE MOVING FRONT/ THE GOOD FEAR 10 p.m., White Water Tavern. $5.
For at least recent memory, White Water has copied the ACAC formula, with some tweaking. Smaller line-ups. Proven bands. Fewer good costumes. This year, the bill — which features the Moving Front as REM and the Good Fear reprising their Six Tom Pettys and the Heartbreaker from last year — is a traveling Halloween hoorah. On Friday, both will be in Fayetteville at the Boom Boom Room warming up. Which is good not just because it means the bands will have a test show under their belts, but even more because, while you could imagine a band winging it for one cover gig, two shows means actual practice. I know that's the case with TMF. Dudes are usually fairly blase about what they're doing, but not about this. They know it sounds good. Practice or no, the Good Fear should be sturdy from their blonde wig extravaganza from last year, which was nothing but fun.
As in years past, the Arkansas Community Arts Cooperative has assembled a wildly diverse slate of local folks to not just cover but fully impersonate iconic acts. Lots of potential here. Members of Style Guide and Hector Faceplant will be blonde-wigged-up and pop-hooked-out as pop sensation ABBA. Which, hopefully, will be paired with Minneapolis post-punks Husker Du, as covered by Do You Remember, an ad hoc band made up of members of the Thing That Always Explodes, the Evelyns and the STDs. Or even better, next to the quintessential Halloween band, the Misfits, as realized by Little Rock's God City Destroyers, who, at least based on their photo on MySpace, seem to have that burly, Danzig thing going on. Also on the bill: a collection of UALR music students doing Blondie and local punks Jungle Juice doing hardcore heroes Infest. Those in costumes get in for $5. There's a $50 costume contest prize.

In Conway at the Bear's Den, a host of UCA professors join to play music and raise money for the literary journal Exquisite Corpse (which is published by the UCA writing department). The ad hoc groups play under names like the Amsterdamned, Stroke Newington and the Conway Twitties, 8 p.m., $5.
Late night at Discovery, folks seem to turn up the raunch with their costumes. Bill Halliquist mans the disco, while Balance works the lobby, midnight, $10.
