Fraudulent Checks are in the Mail:
I was told by a Bank VP from Marion yesterday that his bank has been having the same types of checks brought into his bank that are described in this Malvern Daily Record story.
According to Southern State Bank president Don Walsh, a SSB customer received a check in the mail for $2,850. Along with the check was a letter stating that the person was the winner of a lottery drawing.
The customer decided to bring the check into the bank to verify that it was not fraudulent.
Walsh said that he verified the account and routing numbers, both of which cleared as numbers for the hospital listed on the check, Wellstar Cobb Hospital.
Since the letter said the lottery was through a lotto group in Canada and the customer had not entered any drawing, Walsh told the customer that the check was likely to be a forgery.
“I told the customer that there was a good chance that it was fraudulent,” Walsh said. “I cautioned them that this was a fairly common scheme. If you do not enter any drawing, it is probably not true.”
