Rex Nelson sends a wake-up call to his home town of Arkadelphia
"To me, Arkadelphia will always be one of the state's garden spots -- a beautiful old town with two universities, two rivers, interstate access, a popular lake just down the road, history, charm and character. As the masthead of the old Southern Standard weekly newspaper once proclaimed, it was the Athens of Arkansas. As someone who is studying economic development, specifically with the intent of helping rural communities, I thought this article was great. Not only were the descriptions and obeservations keen, but the planning points were well-made. While Arkadelphia is truly unique, many of the things in this article also hold true for some of Arkansas' other "forgotten" cities.
