Wet vs. Dry

There is a tiny portion of the corner of Green county that lies between Walnut Ridge (Lawrence County) and Bono (Craighead County).  Well, the 63 registered voters in this precinct will decide whether to take on the sale of the demon water--or not.  This would be a big deal to all those in Western Craighead County--who all currently go to Harrisburg to buy their beer--and to Eastern Lawrence County--who all go to O'kean to buy their beer.

Update:  Rumor has it that a local businessman has purchased property along the highway there and moved in trailers to relocate about 40 voters to the precinct in order to get the issue on the ballot and to ultimately pass it.

I drive through this little spot weekly. You're driving along US 63 in Craighead County, then right before you get to Sedgewick you're suddenly in Green County for about 30 seconds, then right before you reach Sedgewick you're in Lawrence County.

Green County is wet and I've often hoped for a liquor store in this little corner of God's Little Acre of Greene County.

"...and to Eastern Lawrence

I can tell you that most of Randolph County also frequents that O'Kean store (the rest drive north to Missouri, giving their liquor taxes to the Yankees).

"Rumor has it that a local businessman has purchased property along the highway there and moved in trailers..."

I was through there Saturday. Didn't see anything. I'll look closer when I'm through there this week!

Here's an interesting note: In this same little corner of Greene County, a guy put in a bingo parlor a few years ago. The parlor was gutted by fire a few weeks after it opened. The guy rebuilt. A couple of weeks later the parlor burned to the ground. It was not rebuilt. Obviously there's somebody in Sedgewick who doesn't approve of bingo!

Spirit,

There was a liquor store here years ago. The same story applies. They burned it down twice. I'd say our criminal is up there in age.

Well, I can understand a bingo parlor burning. But the kind of profits generated by a liquor store between Craighead and Lawrence Counties would pay for a full-time night watchman!

(I really want this store to open!)

I wish I had thought of this. I didn't even know you could vote a precinct dry. Had I done the research, my family would be sellin' booze right now. This store will make a killin'. It will be the only store between Jonesboro and the Lake. In the summer, that will be a huge deal. It'll make going to Jonesboro a two-for. Jonesboro is the regional shopping market. Now you'll be able to get booze, see a movie, eat Mexican, and shop all in one trip.
