Wine in Iowa?
The New York Times has an article about the dramatic increase in wine production in Iowa and the Midwest in general. Wine grapes and the tourism that comes with them are revitalizing rural Iowa farming communities. Don't tell Mayor Post from Altus that I said so but while I think it's great that we have wineries in Arkansas, I also think it's too hot here to grow good grapes.

You're right about the heat but remember: wine can be made from more than just grapes. We grow great strawberries, watermelon, plums, apples and pears in some places..... so perhaps the way to go is wine of a different flavor.
Also, Arkansas is blessed with many sources of naturally pure water high in biocarbonates, perfect for making..... BEER!. If you like beer, and haven't had a brew from the Diamond Bear brewery in LR, you're missing out.
Unfortunately, Beer/Wine sales and production is oddly regulated, or overregulated if you choose to look at it that way considering the small volume we produce. Lax on the regulation and we could become the premiere winery and brewery of the midsouth, if not beyond. And these businesses can have little environmental impact, another plus.
I like a good beer. So sue me.
