A short history of the Telecomm Board
Last Thursday the Fayetteville Telecomm Board held a joint meeting with the Board of Directors of Community Access Television. This sort of thing is held every few years, so that each board gets to know the other, and its place in the cable universe.
The Admirable Crichton of Fayetteville’s Cable Administration, Marvin Hilton,, put together this excellent short history of the the Telecomm Board for our use last week. I am passing it along so that others may make use of it if they so desire.
1. Created by City Ordinance No. 3549 on May 21, 1991.
2. Cable Board was renamed Telecommunications Board by Ordinance No. 4219 on February 1, 2000 and the Board's duties broadened to include telecommunications.
3. On September 19, 2000, after the City Administration ordered the Government Channel to not televise a public meeting in City Hall discussing a controversy about a grove of trees to be removed at Steele Crossing, the Telecommunication Board requested that an nformational item entitled,Policy On the Use and Programming of the Government Access Channel" be placed on the City Council agenda. The City Administration replaced this item with a roposal to amend the Telecom Board ordinance by adding thephrase, "subject to City council approval" to section 33.20:
(c) The Board shall have authority to promulgate such guidelines and regulations, subject to City Council approval, as are necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities set forth in this section.
The motion was tabled after much discussion by the City Council and was never revisited.
4. After much discussion by a City Council Ad Hoc Committee, on July 15, 2003 Ordinance No. 4504 was created to redefine the composition, officers, staffing, procedures, and the duties of the Telecommunications Board. The section (c) referred to in item "3" above now reads as below:
(c) The Telecommunications Board shall have authority to establish and disseminate such guidelines and regulations as are necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities set forth in this section.

Ah - another boycott to sink our teeth into! “The Golden Compass” is driving the hordes of the easily morally outraged into yet another frenzy.
What do these nimrods think that science fiction and fantasy is all about? If these Protectors of the Faith ever really looked at what is on the science fiction/fantasy shelves, they’d be engaging the help of Mike and Laurie Masterson to lead hysterical citizens in a march on the school board.
