Looking - in vain - for the Union label
Watching ABC News the other night - I refuse to call it “World News” cuz it ain’t - and a piece came on about auto workers in Michigan. One woman’s pay of $28 an hour made her “middle-class.”
I don’t punch a time card any more, but over the years, I have heard many here in Arkansas - a Glorious Right to Work State! - complain about such workers and their pay. These are invariably the same folk who will tell you that the time for unions is past, and that they serve no useful function any more.
At some point during the same week, of course, they would also complain about the size of their paychecks and the lack of meaningful benefits in their jobs. In a movie, this would often be a Saul on the road to Damascus moment, when they might say to themselves:
“Oh! Lousy paycheck - lousy benefits - no union. I wonder what the connection is here?”
Sometimes it would happen. More often than not, they be carping about auto workers and dissing unions the very next week.
Go figure.

They would have had a field day on KOFC with this
Kudos to the Fayetteville City Council for renaming Sixth Street Martin Luther King Boulevard.
It’s times like this, though, when I really miss the folks who would call in to KOFC and vent. Just when you might think there was hope for the world, you’d turn on KOFC and listen to some subtle - and many not so subtle - racist rants.
It was entertaining, in a grim sort of way. It was sort of like going to a dingy bar and listening to the mean drunks.
I wonder what they will all do, now that KOFC has changed formats? Will they have picnics? Rallies? Or will they slink off in the dark to the cretinous world of the Free Republic, where no doubt they will be welcomed with open arms?
