Commentary from Northwest Arkansas

« The dog ate my development? | Main | And you thought the ruckus over "The Golden Compass" was silly . . . »

Northwest Arkansas Times runs April Fool's edition early?

Is the Chamber of Commerce looking over articles before the NWA Times prints them now? Empty plots of ground get described as “unfinished developments,” and today we have not one but two love songs to the crane on the square - one even giving it a name!

I’ve heard quite a few names for it, and most of ‘em aren’t nearly as nice as “Sally Crane.”

Nowhere in the article is the growing distrust that people in Fayetteville have toward developers. I guess there just wasn’t room for it.

Maybe tomorrow?

A reminder from a reader

I’ve been reminded those picked up in the Acambaro raids are still Americans, just not U.S. citizens. It may be a fine point, but one often overlooked in the debate going on around us each day.

Thanks to the reader who wrote to me regarding this.

ABC, Fox News cutting low-polling candidates out of debates

NEW YORK (AP) - New Hampshire officials are urging ABC and the Fox News Channel to include more candidates in this weekend's presidential debates.
The roster of participants for ABC's back-to-back, prime-time Republican and Democratic debates Saturday in New Hampshire will be determined after results of Thursday's Iowa caucus become clear. Fox, meanwhile, has invited five GOP candidates to a forum on Sunday, leaving Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter on the sidelines . . .

Quote of the Day

There are a few science fiction shows that are special to me: Doctor Who, Farscape, Deep Space Nine, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, season one (you got a problem with that?) and Babylon 5. B5 may actually be at the top of the list, depending upon what day of the week it is Though very much a “space opera,” one of the things that B5 offered was a way of looking at the universe in a spiritual sense. This bit of wisdom offered up by one of the characters may well describe the entire series.

The universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice . . . It speaks in the language of hope. It speaks in the language of trust. It speaks in the language of strength and the language of compassion, the language of the heart and the language of the soul. But always it is the same voice. It is the voice of our ancestors speaking through us, and the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born. It is the small, still voice that says, "We are one. No matter the blood, no matter the skin, no matter the world, no matter the star, we are one. No matter the pain, no matter the darkness, no matter the loss, no matter the fear, we are one."

Here, gathered together in common cause, we agree to recognize this singular truth: that we are one; and this singular rule; That we must be kind to one another. Because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost diminishes us. We are the voice of the universe. The soul
of creation. The fire that will light the way to a better future. We are One. We are One. - G'Kar's Declaration of Principles

I remember, as a UA journalism student around 1990, how the NWA Times was a mouthpiece for the city council and other guys-with-ties running Fayetteville. Looks like some things never change. Fortunately, back then we had the Grapevine for balance -- I knew somewhere between what was written on the right and the left was the truth.
