Bentonville becoming a Walton Vanity Project?
Hmm - where to put a science museum in Northwest Arkansas?
Fayetteville, home of the University of Arkansas? Seems like a perfect fit, doesn’t it?
There are a lot of eloquent voices speaking out on this, and mine would just be Same Song, Second Verse.
There are those who would like to see the proposed museum located in Bentonville, however. A lot of folk are wondering if Bentonville - with the opening of Alice Walton’s art museum - is in danger of becoming another Walton vanity project. There are already those behind the scenes who fear that the Walton Arts Center may be preparing to move to Bentonville - where it would no doubt tank.
At any rate, a Fayetteville alderman has requested an issue forum to be put together on Fayetteville’s Government Channel on the Walton Arts Center situation. No doubt that will be on interest to many in the community.

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense, Blockbuster
So Blockbuster, which lost half its market value in a year, wants to buy Circuit City, which is losing money as fast as a Supermodel losing blood in Dracula’s castle.
Aren’t you supposed to buy something that is - I don’t know - profitable?
My last few experiences with Circuit City have been less than pleasant. Last year the warranty on my TV went out, so I went down to the store to see if I could buy an extended warranty. Looking at me like I was stupid, the clerk said, “We don’t offer those. Once your warranty is up, that’s it.”
A few days later, Circuit City Central Command sent me an extension offer. Go figure.
A few months ago I needed to get my SVHS deck repaired, as I am in the process of transferring a lot of SVHS tapes to DVD. Most SVHS tapes won’t play in a regular VHS deck.
Again, looking at me like I was stupid - could have been the same clerk? - I was told, “You should just throw it away. Nobody uses tapes anymore.”
“I just need it fixed,” I said. I didn’t bother to explain why.

Star Trek versus Lucas Roebuck
Good letter in the NWA Times from Johnny Williams of Lincoln, taking the ever-simplistic Lucas Roebuck to task for his churlish remarks on science fiction in a recent column.
Tracy and I were watching “Star Trek” recently and the episode - “A Private Little War” - was really about Vietnam. Just as today, when the only show on television that deals with the issues we face in Iraq is “Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek” was one of the few shows that dealt with such cutting edge issues in the 1960s.
What? You still haven’t given Galactica a try? Well, it’s one Friday night - right after the season opener of “Doctor Who.”
