So - what does the city want in a Telecomm Board member?

A lot of people have asked me to weigh in on Marvin Hilton’s being rejected for the Telecomm Board. Well, about 20 people, but that’s just so far. I’ve made the joke to some people that when faced with the prospect of having someone with actual, credible real-world knowledge on the TB, those responsible for making the selection have reacted like the Martian in the farmhouse in “The War of the Worlds”:

They threw their arms up and ran in the opposite direction.

The comments from others have been less humorous, and more pointed. They see the ugly hand of naked politics in the selection process - the desire to please an unpopular city administration.

The question that came up in several emails can be boiled down to this:

Just what does the city want in a Telecomm Board member? What level of expertise are you seeking?

This is, after all, the committee that deals with highly technical subjects. Since I have been on the board, I have read through literally hundreds of pages of material, been in contact with cities and PEG providers around the country, and read even more material. It’s like going to school all over again.

Well, the city has passed up a chance to have someone with solid gold credentials. The person they do pick to fill the empty chair had better be humdinger of a member, since they have shown themselves to be so choosy.

All the News that Fit to Ignore?

The guess the Pony Express Rider never quite made it to the offices of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in time yesterday; I couldn’t find a word about Dennis Kucinich introducing the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate.

No doubt there will be a nasty, condescending editorial any day now.
