A reader emailed me yesterday, after reading my posting about AT&T’s entry into the Fayetteville market with their much vaunted U-verse, which may be a whole lot less universal than we have been led to believe.

One Fayetteville resident was informed by the good folks at AT&T that service is only available in some parts of town, and not in his - and he lives within the 72701 part of Fayetteville.

His question - and I am sure will be others asking the same thing within a few days - is this:

What are they doing holding a city franchise for services if they are not supplying services to all of the areas within the city limits?

Somebody has some explaining to do, I think, and pretty quickly.

Oh, yeah - and as of noon today, no one from AT&T or the media had contacted the PEG Center, about those missing channels that are supposed to be offered.

That’s not just dropping the ball; it’s hurling it to the ground.

Fayetteville Residents to Protest Gaza War

On Saturday January 10, 2009 from 12:00 noon to 2 PM, local residents, including University of Arkansas students, will protest for an end to the recent war in Gaza. The demonstration will be held in front of the Fayetteville Federal Building located at 35 East Mountain Street.

Sponsors of this event include the Campus Greens, a registered student organization at the University of Arkansas, and the Palestine Café community group of local activists.

The demonstration will consist of a mourning vigil to honor the dead and suffering in the Gaza conflict. In addition, there will be a rally to protest not only the unjust killing of civilians by Hamas, but also the counterproductive Israeli and American policy that is killing hundreds of
civilians and destroying civilian infrastructure or livelihood. These policies ultimately increase hatred and create more terrorism. The point will be to enlighten the public as to the utter failure of this war as a constructive peace policy, and to call for an immediate cease-fire on both
sides of this conflict.

Speakers at the rally will include former United States Congressional candidate Abel Tomlinson and Professor of Anthropology Ted Swedenburg.

Concluding Meeting - Transition Task Force Communication Subcommittee

The Transition Task Force Communication Subcommittee holds its concluding open public hearing Tuesday, January 13 from 6:30 to 8 PM.

This 90 minute open hearing will be held in the Council Chamber (City Hall Room 219). The hearing will be broadcast live on the Government Channel Channel 16).

It will feature live public input for those attending and both a call in or an email option for those viewing from home.
