And yet, almost everyone I know seems to want a single-payer system
I’ve been intrigued by the earnest Canadian woman who has been on our TV screens lately, warning us of the terrible dangers that may befall us, should we tamper with our health-care system.
You’d have to wait months before you see a specialist, is one of the grim warnings we often hear. Well, this only works on the very naive or the very healthy, who never have cause to call a medical specialist. The older you get, and the more cancer (or other illnesses in your family), you get just the same wait here.
The elephant in the room, of course, in the insurance industry.
Shall we have a show of hands of everyone in the audience who hasn’t been screwed over by an insurance company at least once?
Almost every working-class person I know favors a single-payer system. They aren’t stupid, and they educate themselves on the issues - possibly more than some of our legislators. Yet single-payer has been taken off the table.
Well, “officially” it has - but not on the public imagination. All the plans currently being offered are just another band-aid, when what is really need is major surgery to remove the cancer that is eating us up from within.

Greg Leding will officially announce his candidacy for the Arkansas House of Representatives at the Fayetteville Farmers' Market this Saturday (10am) on the Fayetteville Square.
- Dr. Stephen Smith, professor in the Department of Communication in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas and husband of Rep. Lindsley Smith (D-92) expected to introduce the candidate.
- Leding says education, ecology, equality, and the economy are his top priorities.

Camera help needed for NWA Pride Day on Saturday, June 27
The annual NWA Pride parade will be taking place on Saturday, June 27, and help is being sought in videotaping the parade.
Two volunteers are needed for a few hours that day, one of which needs to be certified by C.A.T., since that person will be using C.A.T. equipment. The other person should just be conversant with cameras.
