Things to Know

The streetcar your desire?
BUSES, SHUTTLES AND TROLLEY CARS, TOO.

Little Rock’s River Rail Streetcar Line saw another significant milestone in 2007, with the completion of Phase II: a 0.9 mile track extension down Third Street with stops at the Clinton Library and the headquarters of Heifer International. The $9 million extension added to the 2.5 miles of track laid in Phase I of the River Rail project. Plans are now in the works to extend the trolley system approximately 3 miles to Little Rock National Airport – a route that could utilize a combination of unused freight tracks and new construction.

Currently, the River Rail streetcar follows a route in both Little Rock and North Little Rock, crossing the Arkansas River via the Main Street Bridge. In addition to newly added stops at the Clinton Library and Heifer International headquarters, the River Rail streetcar services the River Market, downtown North Little Rock, the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Old State House, the Pulaski County Courthouse, the Peabody and Capital hotels, and other stops. Average time to complete the entire route is around 45 minutes. The fare to ride is 50 cents until March, when it will increase to $1. Riders can also purchase a day pass for $2. Also starting in March, riders will be able to purchase a 3-day pass for $5, or a $15 punch card good for 20 rides.

In Little Rock, day passes are available at the Main Library at 100 Rock St., Courtyard by Marriott at 521 President Clinton Ave., Historic Arkansas Museum at 200 E. Third St. and the River Cities Travel Center at 310 E. Capitol Ave. In North Little Rock, they can be purchased at the City Services Building at 120 Main St.

The trolleys run continuously from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 11 a.m.-midnight Thursday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

CAT’s buses operate on 36 routes in Little Rock and North Little Rock. The fare is $1.25. Children age 4 and under ride free, and there are discounts for students and for senior citizens (65 and over) and persons with disabilities.
