  • Mojitos, no problems

    June 19, 2015
Hot weather is here, and our thoughts are on ways to beat the heat. One way we particularly enjoy is the mojito. Learn to make this rum, lime and mint treat for yourself, or take a look at our suggestions for where to get the best mojitos in town. /more/
  • Arts Center ending year in black, again

    June 8, 2015
The Arkansas Arts Center is about to close out the 2014-15 fiscal year in the black for the fifth year in a row, the Board of Directors heard today, with a current surplus of $171,000 thanks to revenue from a successful Tabriz fund-raiser and careful budgeting. That's a far cry from the $1.2 million in the red that closed the Arts Center's 2009-10 fiscal year. /more/
  • Midtown's Hinson and Robinson to open blues and barbecue joint in NLR

    June 8, 2015
Maggie Hinson, owner of Little Rock's beloved SOMA dive bar Midtown Billiards, reports that she's working on opening a new jazz and blues club in North Little Rock's Argenta neighborhood. The club, to be called 4-Quarter, will be housed in the old location of Sidetracks Bar, at 415 Main Street. Target open date is sometime in mid-August. /more/

  • Forever Charlie: Charlie Wilson live at Verizon Arena

    June 1, 2015
Charlie Wilson, one of the greatest R&B artists of all time, came to Verizon Arena last Friday night and performed for a near-sold-out crowd as part of his Forever Charlie Tour with special guests Joe and Kem. Joe opened the show, Kem followed with a great set, and Charlie rocked the house. If you missed it, you missed out on something wonderful. /more/
  • John Wooldridge at Cantrell Gallery tonight

    May 15, 2015
Maumelle artist John Wooldridge, in his statement for Cantrell Gallery, says: "Lonely times, lonely places, the periods of transition and reconciliation of loss. I am driven by the beauty of nature and the place of humans within it. I have a predilection for those themes with which I am most familiar and which were meaningful to me in my childhood. Streams, rivers and bodies of water hold a particular fascination as do small towns and the fading remnants of our civilization, so quickly reclaimed by the land." /more/
  • Vandalism, poop threaten Big Dam Bridge hours and dog walking privilege

    April 30, 2015
I learned from a bicycling blog, JBarCycling, that hours on the popular Big Dam Bridge may be curtailed because of vandalism and dogs could be banned because of inconsiderate owners. /more/

  • Live Review: Fleetwood Mac returns to Verizon with classic lineup reunited

    April 23, 2015
Fleetwood Mac is a band that embodies change and transformation. After a slew of different lineups, they hit their stride in the mid-‘70s, around the time that many of their fellow Boomers were settling down and starting families. Maybe that’s why their most beloved songs contrast a sort of jaded wisdom with hopeful confidence – the perfect soundtrack for growing up while still feeling young and looking forward to the future. /more/
  • Pig ears, galloping horses, quesadillas, 'shrooms and bratzels: start your meal right

    April 16, 2015
Meal starters? We think they deserve more love. Southern Gourmasian, Juanita's, Tusk and Trotter, The Flying Saucer and Damgoode Pies get a big thumbs up for their appetizers—and that's just scratching the surface. /more/

A boyish white supremacist's massacre of nine worshipers at a black Charleston, S.C., church reminds us that, much as we may wish it were not so here in the old Confederacy, William Faulkner was right when he wrote in "Requiem for a Nun": "The past is never dead. It's not even past."
