Heating up

Posted By on Thu, May 4, 2006 at 9:07 AM

We hear the inevitable pressure points are becoming more evident as the city plans for the 50th anniversary of the Central High crisis in 2007. At a planning meeting yesterday, we hear differences were expressed over a suggestion by Sen. Tracy Steele, director of the state M.L. King Commission, for an event on the program "for the African-American community."

Are racially identifiable meetings really the way to commemorate an end to segregation?

And, yes, more words were uttered about differences of opinion over the extent of recognition given and due white students at Central in 57 vs. the LR Nine.

Was it Faulkner who said, "The past is never dead, it's not even past?" Whoever, you get the drift.
