Hendrix to move some dirt

Hendrix College Trustees today approved the beginning of a 100-acre residential and commercial development across the street from the campus, to be known as The Village at Hendrix. It's ambitious stuff and the idea is to create something that looks like neighborhoods looked long ago -- the so-called New Urbanism.

Said President Tim Cloyd:  “The Village at Hendrix will bring to life memories of a lifestyle when the grocery store was truly around the corner and neighbors could chat with each other from their front porches – a vibrant, close-knit, environmentally-friendly community that promotes intellectual stimulation.”

Traditional Neighborhood Development Partners of Durham, N.C., will develop the project. Hendrix said it had chosen Andres Duany, "widely regarded as America's greatest town planner since Daniel Burnham in the late 19th or John Nolen in the early 20th century, to design the village.”

The work will be done in five phases. The first, to begin in 2007, includes 68 single-family houses, 23 townhouses and "live/work" homes; 75 apartments and nearly 70,000 square feet of retail and office space.
