Reece leaving UAMS

Posted By on Wed, Jun 7, 2006 at 10:11 AM

The deal we wrote about earlier is done. Dr. Albert Reece, dean of the University of Arkansas College of Medicine, will be leaving UAMS to head the med school at the University of Maryland. He'll be going to Maryland in September. No official announcement yet, so we don't know if UAMS is ready with an interim appointment. There will be a search for a permanent replacement.

Reece's e-mail to colleagues on the jump.

Dear Colleagues:

My family and I received a very warm welcome and strong support from the people of Arkansas in general and the UAMS family in particular.  I have received very strong professional support from the Chancellor, the Com Department Chairs and other campus leaders as well as COM faculty and staff.  We can truly say that we have been recipients of a full dose of southern hospitality and for this we are exceedingly grateful.  However, after careful consideration, I decided to accept an offer made to me from the University of Maryland to serve as the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Scholl of Medicine.  In this light, I will resign my current position effective September 1, 2006.

It will be five years that I have spent serving as your Dean.  In all candor, it has been extremely rewarding.  The COM has been amazingly successful during this period, in large part, due to our talented faculty and the excellent faculty leadership throughout the COM.  Together we have accomplished a lot.  In fact, our ambitious 5-year plan is virtually completed in record time.  I am leaving with mixed emotions, but for the next three months, I will continue to work vigorously to advance all plans and projects underway.

Once again, my family and I remain most grateful to everyone for the warm embrace and strong support that we have received.  I feel confident that UAMS will continue its pursuit of excellence under the current COM and campus leadership.

With kindest personal regards to all.

Sincerely,

Al
