Sympathy for the governor

Posted By on Thu, Jun 8, 2006 at 5:57 AM

Radio show callers pounded Gov. Huckabee yesterday for the coming law against smoking in public workplaces. No wiggling from the governor here. He stood fast against the fanatics who believe they have a right to blow their smoke on others and who believe that a majority of voters -- most of whom don't smoke -- agree with them. Never mind polls that say otherwise. How stout was the governor in defending this public health initiative? Mighty stout for somebody who once said he didn't want the state to be a tobacco police force over private business and who has accepted political contributions from the tobacco industry.

Huckabee responded to one question by saying that he would support a ban on all cigarette sales in the state. Health care cost savings would more than make up for the loss of tax revenue, he said.

That is stout.
