Men on the street

Posted By on Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 7:19 PM

I dropped by the world's largest convenience store tonight -- Harvest Foods in Riverdale. You can just about always count on finding a ripe avocado there and no lines at checkout. Tonight was no exception.

I ran into a bipartisan pair of legislators, buying bacon and eggs for a deluxe dinner at the Capitol Hill apartments. It reminded me that many of these guys work hard, try hard and, even when I disagree with them, vote from the heart.

On their mind: Huckabee's cheap play to the peanut gallery on passing out the surplus in rebate checks and blaming the legislature for not going along. I won't recite the full discussion. But suffice it to say we talked about earlier tax cuts followed by hasty increases; the potential impact of rising interest rates on economic growth; school construction needs; secondary road construction needs; the strain on infrastructure presented by booming growth in Northwest Arkansas.

If I read them right: They're intrigued by the notion of gradually reducing the sales tax on groceries, all needs being met.

I'm happy to say they're blog readers. And if I've misquoted them, they know where to file comments.

How about making this tonight's OPEN LINE?
