On cashing in

Posted By on Sat, Jul 8, 2006 at 4:22 AM

Brummett sits down with A$a to discuss the business of Hutchinson's trading his name and former federal government position for lobbyist/penny stock riches. Hutchinson's primary defense: Everybody else does it. Key admission: Yes, some clients might want to do business with state government.

A quibble with Hutchinson's citation of Democratic icons such as Wesley Clark and James Lee Witt, who, first of all, don't happen to be running for governor. On the lobbying end of things, the comparison is apt. (Though Witt, for one, actually provides consulting expertise, too, in areas in which he has proven ability.) In the penny stock deal, Hutchinson is selling his name for its presumed influence on government purchasing decisions. It's that simple. And it smells.
