Measuring the candidates

Posted By on Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 10:08 AM

Gallup has been polling on the "acceptability" of potential Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.

The key findings -- remember the emphasis was on acceptability not preference -- is that Democratic voters found Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Al Gore about equally acceptable. On the Republican side, a greater percentage found Rudy Giuliani acceptable than the percentage that ranked John McCain acceptable.

Local angle? You bet. Gov. Huckabee was among the 12 potential Republican candidates that Gallup asked about. Only 17 percent said Huckabee would be an acceptable candidate. A whopping 40 percent said he would be unacceptable, while the rest had no opinion on him. Gallup notes that he's a second-tier candidate, not widely known, and the numbers could change. On the Democratic side, Wesley Clark's numbers were 42 acceptable; 49 unacceptable; 10 percent no opinion.

(Thanks to an Arkansas Republican who would count himself among the 40 percent for the tip on this poll result.)
