Winrock: Troubles in Tashkent

Posted By on Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 8:52 AM

Winrock International, the Little Rock-based nonprofit that provides agricultural development assistance around the world, has gotten the boot from Uzbekistan for producing material intended to raise the legal awareness of women. Here's a Radio Free Europe brief. A report from Uzbekistan itself, though in somewhat difficult English, captures the flavor of doing business there. Winrock, the article notes, is based in "the city of Arkansas (US)."

According to a Russian news service, Winrock was accused by the government  of producing video and print materials that created a "negative and distorted" image of gender relations in traditional Uzbek (Islamic) households.
