Church/state pioneer

The NY Times has a long obit today on Vashti McCollum, who filed a 1948 suit in Illinois that led to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling prohibiting religious instruction in public schools. McCollum acted on behalf of her son, James. He now lives in Emerson, Ark., and remains active in Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.
