What a weigh to go

Posted By on Wed, Oct 4, 2006 at 1:12 PM

R.W. Apple, the legendary NY Times reporter who earned our undying envy for his recent years as a galloping gourmand, chronicling the best food in the greatest cities in the world, died today of cancer at 71. In his final hours, he cranked out his final piece, a report on the great chefs of Singapore.

In a statement, Times editor Bill Keller said:

''He was himself to the last. 'From his sickbed he hammered out his last words to readers ... negotiated details of the menu and music for his memorial service, followed the baseball playoffs and the latest congressional scandal with relish.''
