One last grab for Mike Huckabee

Posted By on Sat, Nov 11, 2006 at 5:38 AM

Stephens Media follows up our exclusive on the gift registries at Dillard's and Target soliciting housewarming gifts for Mike and Janet Huckabee. (A mention of us would have been nice, guys.)

But they get what we could not, naturally: Confirmation from that hard-working and amiable Huckabee press secretary that this event is indeed for Mr. and Mrs. Huckster.

The term-limited governor leaves office in January, and friends of Janet Huckabee created the registries at Dillard's and Target stores to help facilitate their transition to private life, Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart said Friday.

The Huckabees purchased a 7,000-square-foot home in North Little Rock this year.

"Some ladies who are friends of Janet's are giving her a housewarming party," Stewart said.

Yes, after 10 years of royal living, a transition to paying your own bills, driving your ownself around,  etc., is going to be tough. A few gifts ought to cushion the unimaginable shock. Stephens also sought a comment from Arthur Kerns, one of those who sued The Huckster over earlier expense account and gift abuses.

"He's using the trappings of the governor's office to get everything he can, and the sad part of it is, I honestly believe he does not see anything wrong with this," said Kerns, a retired lawyer for the Department of Veterans Affairs. "It's like 'ethics' is a foreign word to him."

In retrospect, that headline "last grab" is almost certainly inaccurate. We've been encouraged, for example, to keep an eye on the State Police plane hangar and the commercial airline counters for lame-duck travel by the Hucksters on taxpayers' dimes.
