Hot new video game

Posted By on Fri, Jan 12, 2007 at 3:31 PM

We got a whisper today that the cable TV industry is hoping to fight back against the AT&T move to sell video services throughout Arkansas via phone lines. A bill is circulating that sounds sort of like an "any willing provder" law for TV services. Under it, no local government could allow a utility to provide video services on a basis more favorable than that afforded another provider. The effect would be to invalidate video deals struck in about five Arkansas cities and prohibit similar deals in the future.

I suspect the phone company can protect itself. The Municipal League likely falls on the phone company's side. The more utilities paying franchise fees the better.

There are plenty of former legislators around willing to do work for anybody with a dog in this hunt.
