Another special meeting at 5:30 p.m. today. The desegregation lawsuit will be discussed. It is not clear at this minute what this means. With hearings scheduled this weekend on the case, does the new board majority have something in mind to alter the fundamental nature of the proceeding? Might they (encouraged even by Jonathan Kozol’s words last night) be ready to pull away from the request for unitary status? Or might they be seeking a delay of Judge Bill Wilson’s review of programs to monitor student achievement? That process has been complicated by the turmoil over Karen DeJarnette’s report to the Board that administrators had tried to fudge her findings on the monitoring issue and Superintendent Roy Brooks’ subsequent effort to fire her.
