Focus on the kids

Study says it pays to reach at-risk kids before kindergarten. Full report here on the assessment of how kids in Arkansas's Better Chance program for pre-K fare better than those now enrolled. Gov. Mike Beebe uses the report to back up his call for more spending on pre-K.

Earlier education, smaller classes, teaching as the most highly valued (and paid) profession, the promise (as in El Dorado) that completion of school promises college. All these thngs sound better to me than slavish devotion to standardized test scores as a pay determinant, a formula doomed, over time, to merely diminish overall pay of the teaching profession. It's a Trojan horse for a way to end annual cost-of-living raises and raises based on experience.
